Foreword: Home recording studio setup - The Recording Room

ADVERTISEMENTS

We all musicians dream about recording our musical compositions. For this, they are hundreds of recording studios willing to provide their services. Nevertheless, not everyone can record on a commercial recording studio, most professional recording studios are expensive, and many times we do not feel comfortable going against time. The best way to avoid these inconveniences is by owning a home recording studio.

Having a home recording studio is the best investment you may do. However, you must build all bases. It is not just a matter of having all required recording studio equipment but making the room fit to our recording needs.

The recording studio room

A recording studio room is one of the most important and fundamental elements of the studio. Do not take me wrong, you may achieve an acceptable demo using basic home recording studio equipment in a room of your house. Nonetheless, you may not achieve the quality of a professional recording studio.

Building the recording room is recommended but not in all cases. Most musicians have no available space to carry out this construction; however, it’s possible to make it fit on any room of our house. How?

There are three important things we must take into account for setting up our recording studio room:

  1. Sound isolation: To avoid external sounds when recording, either your wife is calling you for lunch or the neighbor dog is barking, you must keep in mind sound isolation. Personally, I find it quite frustrating when one of my recording sessions is interrupted by external sounds. Also, we must take into account whether our neighbor is willing to listen to our recording sessions day-by-day.
  2. Home recording studio design: Not all recording studio room is designed for the same purpose. Each recording style requires different room shape. For example, the section for drums and rhythm is different than a section for guitar recording. The drum room creates decays on cymbals but benefits basses. Guitar sections make sounds clear. Either, they are special rooms for strings and piano recording as well as vocals. We will cover this ahead.
  3. Quality Assurance: It is important to keep the quality of our recording room. For this, we should keep the construction quality. You will always have options to hire construction contractors to make easy the construction thing. However, the 99% percent of what we require to build the recording room is unknown by construction companies. To avoid any inconvenient on building implementation and to avoid losing money, I suggest keeping the construction quality as a big priority. This can be done by hiring an inspector, or you can do it all by yourself.

I must clarify that all mentioned above does not only refer to build a recording room from scratch but also when we fit a room of our house to be the recording room.
