First step to fame: The recording studio
Every musician is looking forward to improving on. The most important step in the life of the musical compositor is launching their first album. I remembered how my friends were always anxious to start our first recording in a professional recording studio. It wasn’t easy, as professional recording studios are expensive.
The first time we stepped into an audio recording studio, we were amazed; we had never seen recording studio equipment such close to us. Unfortunately, on a recording studio, time is imperative because recording studio rates tend to be kind of high. However, it depends of the quality of the same. The recording studio rates go from $40 dollars/hour to $200 dollars/hour or even more. Even so, we managed to perform our recording. Nevertheless, we had an inconvenient.
Regardless we could make a good deal of $35 dollars/hour; the drummer forgot his part repeatedly during the recording, spending unnecessary time and money. At the beginning, we could tolerate this; however, we were running out of money. Fortunately, the owner of the music recording studio was generous allowing us to finish the rest of the recording with the money we had.
What makes so great a recording studio is the quality of their recordings. Anyone could record their recordings on a common computer using cheap mixer software. However, recording studio equipments are flawless. Remembering such glorious time on that recording studio, we could look at the equipment with details.
The sound recording studio had an isolated room which is designed for acoustics. In front of the room, there is a glass window where the recording engineer monitors the recording process. The room is lined using a special material, allowing proper acoustics. Moreover, there is a wide range of microphones, which are used for different purposes: The vocal microphone, microphones for the drums, ambiance microphones and guitar microphones. What really impressed me was a powerful microphone pre-amplifier: the Avalon.
There was another room, where the recording engineer and the rest of the equipment were located:
- An impressive mixer console with more than 50 channels.
- A powerful computer loaded with the famous Pro Tools.
- Two small but powerful monitor speakers
Now, I can understand the Price charged by audio recording studios. Besides of having a supreme quality, the recording engineer is responsible to eliminate all unnecessary noises as well as to capture in detail every detail of each sound.
Definitely, a recording studio is a good business; the initial investment may be expensive, though. The earnings are bigger, inasmuch as is a business where both, customer and supplier win.
